The
most common mechanism of injury causing an ankle
sprain is one in which the foot is turned inward,
causing a strain to the outside of the ankle. It is
usually accompanied by swelling, pain, and stiffness.
Early aggressive treatment of ankle sprains in the
acute stage is crucial for quicker recovery, as well
as optimal healing over the long term. Even though the
pain and swelling will often resolve over time,
reoccurrences are common without proper treatment and
rehabilitation.A thorough examination including
orthopedic testing and X-ray or MRI studies, if
necessary, will help to determine your exact diagnosis
and individualized treatment plan. In the acute stage
of recovery, chiropractic treatment can provide relief
by reducing the level of pain and swelling using
manipulation and physiotherapy (electric stimulation
and/or ultrasound). You will be given instructions for
proper bracing, compression and elevation to do at
home. Therapeutic exercises will also be given in
order to rehabilitate the muscles, ligaments, and
ankle joint. This will strengthen the area and prevent
re-injury. |

There are many different types of arthritis the most
common being osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.
Treatment will depend on an accurate diagnosis which
may involve X-rays and/or blood tests. Whether you
choose to use chiropractic care exclusively, or in
conjunction with conventional medicine, the doctor
will work with you to create an individualized
treatment plan in order to best treat your particular
type of arthritis. Joint and soft tissue manipulation
is often very helpful in relieving the aches and pains
of most forms of arthritis. Other treatment options
may include electrical muscle stimulation, ultrasound,
therapeutic exercises and myofascial release
techniques. Once significant improvement is made, many
patients will work with their prescribing physicians
to see if gradually weaning themselves off of any
drugs they may be using is a possibility. |

Car accidents, blows to the back in sports, and
on-the-job injuries can easily leave you with a
whiplash injury. While symptoms are often felt
immediately, pain may be delayed for days, months, or,
in rare cases, even years. In fact, many people wake
up with neck pain without being aware of ever having a
head or neck injury. The most common symptom of
whiplash (affecting 62% to 92% of those injured) is
neck pain, and it usually begins between two hours and
two days after the accident. This is often the result
of tightened muscles that react to either muscle tears
or excessive movement of joints from ligament damage.
The muscles tighten in an effort to splint up and
support the head, limiting the excessive movement.
While muscle relaxants and pain killers can relieve
some of the discomfort of these muscle spasms, these
medications will only cover up symptoms, failing to
address the cause of the problem.
An estimated
66% to 70% of those suffering from whiplash complain
of headaches. The pain may be on one side or both, on-
again/-off again or constant, in one location or more
diffuse. These headaches, like neck pain, are often
the result of tightened, tensed muscles trying to keep
the head stable and, like tension headaches, they are
often felt behind the eyes. Shoulder pain, often
described as pain radiating down the back of the neck
into the shoulder blade area, also may be the result
of tensed muscles.
Muscle tears often
are described as burning, prickling or tingling pain.
More severe disc damage may cause sharp pain with
certain movements which are relieved by holding your
hand over your head. So if you suspect you have a
whiplash injury, and/or have been involved in an
automobile accident, or if you are having neck pain
for some other reason our office is ready to help you
with all of the paperwork, including helping you to
get a claim number established and billing the
insurance carrier. We'll help guide you through the
red tape, so that you can focus on receiving the care
you need and deserve. |

This syndrome is caused by pressure placed on the
median nerve that passes through the small bones of
the wrist as it enters the hand. The reason for the
pressure on the nerve can vary, but it is commonly due
to repetitive strain. Repetitive strain disorders, or RSD, have become an increasing problem in today's
society. With more people spending increasing hours at
computer keyboards and "mousing," we have seen an
increase in carpal tunnel syndrome and similar
conditions. People suffering from carpal tunnel and
related syndromes describe their symptoms as: pain,
numbness, tingling, and sometimes loss of grip
strength.
A thorough examination including orthopedic
and neurologic testing and X-ray or MRI studies, if
necessary, will help to determine your exact diagnosis
and individualized treatment plan. The key to
successful treatment is removing the inflammation
surrounding the median nerve and correcting the
underlying biomechanical causes including poor
posture, poor ergonomic environment at work, and
improper technique while exercising. Spinal
manipulation, soft tissue manipulation, physiotherapy,
therapeutic exercise, and modifications of the home,
work, and health club routines are very effective in
resolving the condition and its related symptoms.
However, if after examination the doctor concludes
that your case cannot be helped with conservative
care, a prompt referral will be made. |

If you've ever watched a toddler
master the art of walking.... there are lots oftumbles and
falls. Older children are also at risk of spinal
trauma. Sports activities, poor posture ("slouching"),
heavy backpacks and working at an improperly sized
desk all take a toll.
How often chiropractors have encountered parents who
appreciate the importance of regular checkups for
their child's teeth, hearing, eyes and ears, but draw
a blank when it comes to a spinal checkup. In fact, a
spinal checkup could be one of the most important
checkups your child will ever have. Your child's spine
is his/her lifeline because running through it is the
spinal cord, containing billions of nerve fibers that
send messages and energy from the brain to every part
of their body. Spinal problems can start earlier than
you might think -- much earlier. In fact, the birthing
process itself has been shown to wreak havoc on a
baby's spine.
It's no wonder that many youngsters develop a spinal
condition called vertebral subluxation. This condition
occurs when spinal movement is restricted or bones
(vertebrae) are out of alignment. Vertebral subluxation
is linked with a myriad of childhood ailments, such as
colic, asthma, ear infection, and attention deficit
disorders. As children grow older, untreated vertebral
subluxations may also spark headaches, back pain and
carpal tunnel syndrome. Dr. Levine works to correct
these subluxations before the onset of symptoms -- and
to prevent new ones from forming. This is accomplished
with extremely gentle, modified adjusting techniques
to alleviate spinal problems in pediatric patients. |

Many people turn to chiropractic care for safe,
effective treatment of disc injuries. This is
sometimes referred to as a "slipped" disc", but discs
don't actually slip out of place. Discs can, however,
bulge or herniate, causing pain at the site of injury,
and/or numbness, pain, tingling, and weakness to
radiate down the arms or legs. The pain and other
symptoms are caused by the disc putting pressure on
the spinal nerves, which leads to inflammation, pain
and impaired function. Pinched nerves can cause your
symptoms to travel away from the spine, along the
course of the affected nerve.
The nerves of the neck
travel down the shoulder and extend into the arm,
hand, and fingers. This why so many neck problems
cause symptoms into the arm and hand. The nerves of
the low back join to form the sciatic nerve, which
travels down the leg into the foot.
This is why a
"pinched nerve" of the low back with symptoms
radiating down the leg is often called "sciatica".
Discs can be injured by an acute trauma, or can be
injured slowly over time by poor posture, lifting
incorrectly, and loss of normal spinal function (joint
restrictions, misalignments, subluxations). Whatever
the cause, disc injuries usually respond very well to
chiropractic care. Before treatment begins, a thorough
examination including orthopedic and neurological
testing and X-ray or MRI studies, if necessary, will
help to determine your exact diagnosis and
individualized treatment plan. Spinal manipulation is
effective in restoring normal position and function to
the joints, as well as to the surrounding muscles and
nerves.
This usually leads to a decrease in pain and
faster recovery. Part of your
treatment may also include some of the following:
electrical muscle stimulation, ultrasound, moist heat
therapy and therapeutic exercises. If you are
experiencing the symptoms of disc injury or "pinched
nerve", we recommend that you schedule an appointment
as quickly as possible. |

Fibromyalgia
(FM or FMS) is a chronic syndrome ( constellation of
signs and symptoms) characterized by diffuse muscle,
joint or bone pain accompanied by fatigue and wide
range of other symptoms. It is not
contagious, and recent studies suggest that people
with fibromyalgia may be genetically predisposed. It
affects more females than males, with a ratio of 9:1
by ACR (American College of Rheumatology) criteria.
Fibromyalgia is seen in 3% to 6% of the general
population, and is most commonly diagnosed in
individuals between the ages of 20 and 50, though
onset can occur in childhood. For proper diagnosis and
treatment, a wide variety of factors need to be
considered including "head-to-toe" joint and muscle
function, dietary, and lifestyle issues.
A thorough
examination including orthopedic and neurological
testing, as well as other specialized tests, will help
to determine the exact causes of your symptoms and
your individualized treatment plan. Very often, a
comprehensive treatment program addressing all of
these issues leads to significant improvement. Joint
and soft tissue manipulation is often very helpful in
relieving the aches and pains of fibromyalgia and
related conditions.
Part of your treatment may
include, ultrasound, electrical muscle stimulation and
massage. Although researchers are still a long way
from finding a "cure" for fibromyalgia, chiropractic
care is usually very successful in the effective
management of the symptoms associated with this
condition. |

More than 15 million Americans suffer from persistent
recurring headaches with no obvious cause. Pain pills
only temporarily relieve headache symptoms, never
addressing the cause. Numerous studies have found that
chiropractic care helps a variety of headaches.
Tension headaches are one of the most common types of
headaches. Recent studies show that many of these
originate in the neck where the cervical vertebrae are
located.
A medical doctor doing research at Syracuse
University said, "We've been able to put together a
scientific explanation for how neck structure causes
headaches... It's true what chiropractors have been
saying for years... They were right about headaches. "A recently published controlled study concluded,
spinal manipulation has a significant positive effect
in cases of cervicogenic (originating from the neck)
headache." They found that chiropractic care reduced
the number of headache hours by an impressive 69% and
reduced the intensity of the remaining headaches.
Migraine headaches, perhaps the most severe headaches,
also respond to chiropractic care.
In one study, 74.7%
of migraine patients were greatly improved under
chiropractic care, and the success rate was maintained
two years after the care ended. Then there was the
Parker study, funded by the Australian government that
found chiropractic care effective for migraine
headaches. A follow-up study of the initial trial
concluded, "The trial clearly established that
chiropractic was an effective treatment for migraine."
Chiropractic care is not just for backaches. If you
suffer with headaches, call our office to discuss your
treatment options. |

Sooner or later, an amazing 8 of every 10 people will
suffer with some low back
pain in their lifetime. So
many people have found relief from back pain through
chiropractic care that chiropractors often are thought
of as back doctors. Of course, they do specialize in
care of the spine, but spinal problems can cause not
only back pain but all sorts of health problems
throughout your body. Still, chiropractic care is
indeed effective for back pain.
In fact, The US Agency
for Health Care Policy and Research recently appointed
a panel of medical experts who reviewed some 3,900
studies on care for acute low back pain. The panel
rejected bed rest, surgery (except rare cases),
injections into the back, and all oral prescription
drugs (such as antidepressants or steroids).
In
contrast, they found that spinal manipulation, which
usually is performed by a chiropractor, "can be
helpful for patients with acute low back problems."
There are fewer studies on long-term chronic back pain
than short-term acute back pain. Still, a recent study
in the respected medical journal, Spine found
chiropractic care beneficial for ongoing chronic back
pain. The traditional approach for patients with
chronic back pain has been back pain school to teach
patients how to cope and live with the pain.
Chiropractic care was compared to back pain school in
this study, and the chiropractic group did
significantly better. The researchers concluded,
"spinal manipulation is clinically useful in chronic
pain patients who have been suffering for seven weeks
or more." Part of your treatment may also include some
combination of the following: ultrasound, electrical
muscle stimulation, most heat therapy, cryotherapy and
therapeutic exercises.
So many scientific and government studies have proven
the effectiveness of chiropractic care for back pain
that in 1993, the government of Ontario, in a 216-page
study of all available evidence, found chiropractic
care of low back pain superior to medical management
in terms of safety, evidence of effectiveness,
evidence of cost, and patient satisfaction.

Many people turn to chiropractic care for safe,
effective
treatment of low back pain with leg pain,
numbness, and tingling. This is sometimes called
"sciatica" or a "pinched nerve". Common causes include
"trigger points" in various muscles, and pinched
nerves from stiff and restricted joints.
In cases of a
pinched nerve, you will feel tingling, numbness, and
possibly even weakness due to pressure and
inflammation on a nerve from bulging discs, misaligned
vertebrae or bone spurs along the spine. Pressure on
these "pinched nerves" can cause your symptoms to
travel away from the spine, along the course of the
nerve. The nerves of the low back join to form the
sciatic nerve, which travels down the leg into the
foot. This is why a "pinched nerve" of the low back
with symptoms radiating down the leg is often called
"sciatica." A thorough examination including
orthopedic and neurological testing and X-ray or MRI
studies, if necessary, will help to determine your
exact diagnosis and individualized treatment plan.
Manipulation (adjustment) of the spinal joints is very
effective in restoring normal function to the joints,
as well as to the surrounding muscles and nerves. This
usually leads to a decrease in pain and faster
recovery. Part of your treatment may also include some
combination of the following: electrical muscle
stimulation, ultrasound, hot/cold therapy, myofascial
release and therapeutic exercises in order to get the
best results. If you are experiencing the symptoms of
"pinched nerve" described above, we recommend that you
schedule an appointment as quickly as possible. In the
event that your condition requires a second opinion,
an appropriate referral would be made promptly. |

Mid back pain is often described as dull, sharp,
burning pain with a frequency that is either
intermittent or constant. Some common causes include:
scoliosis, poor posture, repetitive movements,
misaligned vertebrae and/or ribs, and strained
muscles. A thorough examination will differentiate
between these causes, and appropriate treatment will
be rendered.
Mid back pain often responds well to
chiropractic care consisting of spinal manipulation,
physiotherapy and postural recommendations. In many
cases, muscular imbalances can be found in the mid
back, and a therapeutic exercise program that targets
the appropriate muscles is given to assist in
relieving symptoms and preventing re-injury. |

There are many types of muscular pain. Sometimes
muscular pain is the direct result of injury to the
muscle, as in the case of a muscle pull, tear, or
rupture. Other times, the muscular attachment to the
bone (called the "tendon") becomes
strained in a
specific injury, or as the result of repetitive
strain. Examples of repetitive strain to the muscle or
tendon include prolonged and/or poor sitting postures,
repetitive motions, and improper lifting. Most people
don't realize that by the time they actually feel
muscular pain, the surrounding joints and nerves have
also become affected. This is why chiropractic care is
so effective in treating muscular pain: because it is
comprehensive care that addresses not only the
muscles, but also the joints and their related spinal
nerves.
After a thorough examination, the doctor will
determine the exact muscles, joints, and nerves
involved, as well as any underlying causes you may not
be aware of. Depending on the specific findings of
your exam, some combination of the following
treatments may be recommended to decrease your pain
and speed healing: spinal manipulation, ultrasound,
electrical muscle stimulation, hot and cold therapy
and therapeutic exercises in order to get the best results. In the event that your condition requires a
second opinion, an appropriate referral would be made

Scoliosis is a abnormal side to side curvature of the
spine.Scoliotic curves greater than 10° affect 2-3% of
the population. The prevalence of curves less than 20°
is about equal in males and females. Curves greater
than 20° affect about 1 in 2500 people. Curves convex
to the right are more common than those to the left,
and single or 'C' curves are slightly more common than
double or 'S' curve patterns. Males are more likely to
have infantile or juvenile scoliosis, but there is a
high female predominance of adolescent scoliosis.
Young females are seven times more likely than young
males to develop a significant, progressive curvature.
Females are nine times more likely to require
treatment than males as they tend to have larger, more
progressive curves. When the spine suffers this kind of
twisted curvature, a great deal of stress and abnormal
function occurs in the body. The ability of the
nervous system to coordinate and control all
structures and organs of the body is affected. Worst
of all, even the slightest scoliosis tends to progress
with time.
Leaving any scoliosis untreated always
results in early degeneration of the spinal joints and
progressively declining health. Many people have found
that chiropractic is very successful in stopping the
increase of spinal curvature which is seen as
scoliosis progresses. Chiropractic care in some cases
helps reduce the abnormal curvature and return the
spine to be as straight as possible.Once the scoliotic
curve is reduced, then specific spinal adjustments and
exercises help support the strength of the spine. If
you or anyone you know has scoliosis we recommend you
contact our office for an appointment. |

Over the past several years, "impingement syndrome"
and "rotator cuff syndrome" have become more common
phrases replacing the previous terms of bursitis,
tendonitis and supraspinatus syndrome. All of these
terms describe essentially the same phenomena, overuse
injuries and irritation of the rotator cuff. While
other, more serious injuries occur, rotator cuff
irritation is the most common cause of shoulder pain
seen in athletes and non-athletes alike. This can be
due to any combination of factors including poor
posture, poor ergonomic this way environment at work, improper lifting, improper warm-up and stretching techniques for various sports.
Many people complain of
shoulder pain radiating to the side of the arm, where
the deltoid muscle inserts into the long bone of the
arm called the humerus. This occurs due to referred
pain. Pain, soreness and restricted movement when
raising the arm are common complaints. A thorough
examination including orthopedic and neurological
testing and X-ray or MRI studies, if necessary, will
help to determine your exact diagnosis and
individualized treatment plan. Manipulation
(adjustment) of the spinal and joint mobilization is
very effective in restoring normal function as well as

leads to a decrease in pain and quicker recovery.
Part

The temporomandibular joint, or TMJ, is the joint
where the jaw hinges to the skull just in front of the
ear. This joint is held together by a complex system
of muscles, tendons, and ligaments which help it move
up to 2000 times a day, making it the most active
joint in the body. Symptoms of TMJ disorder include
clicking or popping in the jaw, headaches, earaches,
neck pain and sensitive teeth. The causes for TMJ
disorder are many, including dental problems, whiplash
injury to the neck, grinding, clenching teeth and injury to the jaw. Daily stress can lead you to clench
and grind your teeth, both during the day and at night
while you sleep. Clenching means you tightly clamp
your top and bottom teeth together, especially the
back teeth. The stressful force of clenching causes
pressure on the muscles tissues and other structures
around your jaw. Many people who clench also grind
their teeth. Grinding is when you slide your teeth
over each other, generally in a sideways,
back-and-forth movement. This action may wear down
your teeth and be noisy enough at night to bother
sleeping partners.Poor posture can also be an
important factor. For example, holding the head
forward while looking at a computer all day strains
the muscles of the face and neck. Other factors that
might aggravate TMJ symptoms are inability to relax,
poor diet and lack of sleep. The prolonged contraction
of the jaw and neck muscles can produce vertebral
misalignments in the cervical spine.
When the spine is
misaligned, it can irritate nerves causing
irritability, anxiety, headaches, pain or numbness in
the arms and hands and backaches.Manipulation to the
spine as well as soft tissue mobilization of the jaw
bone usually leads to a decrease in pain and quicker
recovery. Part of your treatment may also include some
of the following: ultrasound, electrical muscle
stimulation, hot and cold therapy and therapeutic
exercises in order to get the best results. In the
event that your condition requires a second opinion,
an appropriate referral would be made promptly. |

A detailed examination of the knee, including
orthopedic testing, will help to pinpoint the cause of
your symptoms. In some cases, X-ray or MRI studies
would be obtained to help arrive at an accurate
diagnosis. Whether your knee pain is chronic or acute,
or as the result of a sprain/strain injury, many knee
conditions respond very well to the conservative
treatment of chiropractic care. Pain and swelling in
the knee can be reduced with the aid of physiotherapy.

In addition, strengthening and stretching key muscles
around the knee can speed healing, create better joint
stability and prevent re-injury. If it is determined that
your condition requires a second opinion, an
appropriate referral will be made. |

Most elbow injuries are due to overuse or repetitive
strain. In "tennis elbow" (not always caused by
playing tennis) there is an overuse/overstrain of the
muscles and ligaments that attach at the lateral part
(outside) of the elbow. In "golfers' elbow" (not
always caused by playing golf), the pain is in the
muscles and ligaments on the medial part (inside) of
the elbow. A thorough examination including orthopedic
testing will help to determine your exact diagnosis
and individualized treatment plan. |
| |
|
 |
Once a diagnosis
has been reached, reducing the level of pain and
inflammation around the elbow is of initial concern.
Care consisting of spinal manipulation, ice,
ultrasound and electrical muscle stimulation may be
used to accomplish this goal. Specific therapeutic
exercises will be also be given to rehabilitate the
injured, weakened tissues and overly tight muscles.
|
| |
| Often a specialized brace will be given to prevent recurrent injury to the elbow during the healing
process. Not always thought of as a "chiropractic"
condition by patients, chiropractic's conservative
approach to elbow pain is often very effective,
avoiding more invasive, risky treatment options. If it
is determined that your condition requires a second
opinion, a prompt referral will be made. |

The hip joint is
made up of the large bone of the upper leg, called
the "femur," and the pelvic bone, or "ilium." Hip
pain can develop for a variety of reasons. The
most common causes of hip pain include musclular
imbalance, tendon inflammation (tendonitis),
bursitis, arthritis, and nerve irritation. |
|
|

A thorough examination including
orthopedic and neurological testing and X-ray or
MRI studies, if necessary, will help to determine
your exact diagnosis and individualized treatment
plan. |
|
|

Treatment options include joint
manipulation, physiotherapeutic procedures such as
electrical muscle stimulation, ultrasound and
therapeutic exercises to rehabilitate the affected
muscles. If it is determined that your condition
requires a second opinion, a prompt referral will
be made. |

Workers'
Compensation Insurance covers
chiropractic care with
good reason. Some 13 separate studies in various
states have repeatedly found that chiropractic care
gets better results, getting people back to work much
sooner and at far lower cost than medical care for the
same type of on-the-job back injuries. Chiropractic
care for work related back injuries provides quick
relief and lasting benefit, usually leading to fewer
chronic cases.
That is great for any person hurt at
work and reason enough to have their employer and or
insurance company choose chiropractic care for
work-related job injuries. Our office is ready to help
you with all of the paperwork, including obtaining an
authorization from your employer or insurance company
and directly billing the insurance carrier. We'll help
guide you through the red tape, so that you can focus
on getting better. |
